The Avalanches – Wildflower

Sixteen years after their classic debut Since I Left You, The Avalanches are finally back with a sophomore record. With contributions from Danny Brown, MF Doom, Toro y Moi and Father John Misty, the Australian band doesn’t exactly continue where they left off, but still manages to make an exciting album.

Wildflower is yet another sample-structured record, but this time Chater, De La Cruz and Di Blasi took a bit different direction. Handful of tracks feature more or less popular indie acts, while five other are collaborations with rappers. Most of the latter, triumphant Because I’m Me, goofy The Noisy Eater, colourful Live a Lifetime Love, and one of two Danny Brown-featured tracks, gorgeous The Wozard of Iz, are surprisingly the highlights. Even the (slightly disappointing) comeback single Frankie Sinatra somehow finds its place on the album.

Although it certainly is another beautifully crafted, layered and detailed record, not everything here is necessary. A few deep cuts could have been a bit shorter and the lack of interesting moments in the last fifteen minutes drags the album down. It still feels like something made by The Avalanches and this is the most important thing. But was it worth all this wait? It’s up to you to decide.
