Crystal Fighters – Everything Is My Family

Can we once and for all agree that Crystal Fighters’ artworks inaccurately represent the content of their albums? You’d think Star of Love is a traditional folk album, when in fact it contains nothing but bangers. Cave Rave’s cover may suggest it’s a darker record, but the late-summer singles, You & I and LA Calling, alone prove otherwise. And there’s nothing different here. Although both songs on Everything Is My Family and the gorgeous Mayan-inspired artwork managed to create a sunny feeling, this might be the only thing those two have in common.

But let the music speak for itself. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with making big pop tunes, Crystal Fighters’ back catalogue is full of them after all. What’s wrong is that they decided to take a very strange route and replace their signature sound with cheap, generic, at times Apple ad-like, EDM. Ironically, all in-your-face songs (Yellow Sun, In Your Arms, Ways I Can’t Tell, All Night) fail to bring something new to the table and those low-key songs (Live for You, Moondog, Fly East) are the ones that shine the brightest here.

Everything Is My Family does have that familiar feel-good aura, however with that many uninteresting songs it’s hard to enjoy this album in its entirety. It has its highs and lows, but as a whole piece it doesn’t work well. Sadly, it’s the band’s weakest effort yet.
